The other day I got onto the internet to check out what new movies were coming out in the near future, but much to my surprise, the majority of titles I saw included the words, “The return of,” or had a number after it signifying that it was a sequel. When did Hollywood lose its ability to be creative?
Over the summer, nine out of the ten movies that were top of the box office were sequels. This only encourages Hollywood more because the more money that sequels make, the more sequels Hollywood will make.
Now, I am not saying all sequels are bad because some movies do tend to get better with age such as Ocean’s 13, but sometimes, sequels just tend to go downhill after getting through the hype of the first movie such as Spiderman 3.
I do not remember the last movie I have seen that has not been based of a television show or a book or even another movie. Hollywood has simply lost its creative touch. Now, look at the independent film industry, and you will see a plethora of movies that have extraordinarily creative scripts by writers who are not just in the game for money.
Most are opposed to the idea of independent films though because of their sometimes-mediocre special effects as well as more of the unknown actors and actresses, but at least the films have creative plots to offer.
Hollywood needs to take a few notes on how to keep people’s interest from the independent film industry considering that next year alone, there are already around five different movies coming out in the next four years that are the fourth installments to film series including Indiana Jones 4, Jurassic Park 4, and Spiderman 4.
Hollywood should start picking up more independent films and giving them the credit they deserve by putting them out into theatres for people to see. Maybe if they started doing that, viewers could step out of the melancholy world of sequel after sequel.
Looking back on all of the sequels made to movies recently, all that they seem to me is easy ways to make money because the story-line is just about the same in every single one. For instance, in action movies, good guy is fighting some sort of internal conflict, villian comes along and ruins his plans, good guy has to fight villian, and good guy wins. The only attempt that Hollywood has tried to make this concept more appealing is with Spiderman 3 where instead of having only one villian, they decided to have two.
If we are going to keep making sequels, we at least need to try to keep them interesting; otherwise, we should just stop making them all together because it is getting just a bit rediculous to make sequels that no one wants to watch.
