Once a person turns eighteen, they are entitled to several new rights, but along with those new rights, there are also laws for these new adults. One of the new restrictions is that no one eighteen or older can participate in sexual activity with anyone under eighteen. These predators find it hard to create a relationship with people their own age, so they resort to finding "love" with the young and naive.
Even though most who do this claim that their intentions are innocent, the opposite is usually true. How much could an adult possibly have in common with a fourteen-year-old, who is just getting to know the life of a high school student? What else would draw an adult towards a young, inexperienced teenager, other than the chance of a controlling relationship, a double standard of loyalty, and ultimately the possibility of sex?
Sometimes this issue takes the form of an alumni visiting their alma mater, a little too often. Fellow students may think " Wow, he really misses his old school," when sometimes the former student has other plans in mind. It's obvious he's not visiting the school everyday to visit his old teachers or friends, he's here for his fourteen-year-old girlfriend. Because they see him everyday and could just assume that he is a student, many don't realize the age of this former student. However, he isn't a student anymore; he is a legal adult who could be chasing after a fourteen year old girl.
Understandably, if an 18 year old was dating a younger student previous to turning that age, it would make sense. One would not just end the relationship because he/she reached adulthood. The problem is when the adult or formere student seeks out and finds a student who is under age to make his/her mate.
This is an issue that won't go away unless acted upon. School officials should be stringent about keeping suspicious adults off campus without clearance from the office. If found on campus without a reason, adults should be dealt with by local law enforcement. By doing this, campus safety will be ensured and the likely hood of defenseless teenagers being harassed will be lowered.
