When students walk around campus and see someone they automatically label them, and then from there they go to judge them. It’s not anyone’s fault it’s just natural instinct. To some people it doesn’t matter what other people say about them, but to some it drives them crazy.
“I hate when people set me into a labeled group based on the clothing I wear,” said junior Kelli Fields. Just because you dress in black doesn’t mean that you are emo. Just becuase your favorite color is pink doesn’t mean that your a prep. It could be that you just like black and pink or you only wear black because you know that black makes you appear to be slimmer or pink can bring out someone’s eye or hair color.
To some people though it is the complete opposite. If someone labels them into a specific category it doesn’t bother them in the slightest. “ I don’t care if people label me I just wear whatever is comfortable, but still looks okay,”said junior Marianna Lay. People who are like Lay may dress differently and may take the labels as compliments, but the others that take it as an insult and do not try to be different it just comes natural to them.
“I don’t have a certain way of dressing,
I just dress how I feel,” said junior Kaytlin Stevens. What Stevens is really saying is that she doesn’t really dress in some way so that people notice her, she just dresses in what she feels like wearing that day. Like for instance students who wear sweat pants are considered as lazy, and don’t care about their appearence, but really people who dress in sweat pants are just trying to get through the day as comfortable as possible. Sometimes students are mean when they label others, but it is just a way of the high school life.
“Most of the time I wear sweat pants to school because I just don’t seem to have enough time in the morning to get ready,” said junior Lacey Rueckert.
Remember that kids who are labeling are also being labeled by other students, and it is just a never ending cycle. High school comes with a lot of different people whether they are preps, emo’s, jock’s, skater’s, or whatever, but the labels will never go away. There may come new ones, but later down the road the labeling will never end! Even though you may not stand being labeled, you aren’t the only one.
