When the lights started to come on at the end of the Homecoming dance, Rihanna’s “Disturbia” still deafening attendees, many students wished that the party would never end.
Those students are now lobbying to reignite the spirit of Homecoming in another formal dance later in the year.
At the Student Government Association (SGA) meeting on the first Tuesday after Spirit Week, members were asked to recommend future projects.
Among quiet suggestions of blood drives, clean-up days and powder puff was senior Dyanna Prater’s audacious suggestion of yet another dance.
Talk of the dance dominated the remainder of the meeting, which usually runs until about 11:10 a.m. but on this particular day ran until the end of lunch.
The majority of the SGA was thrilled about the idea, but some members had their doubts.
In the past, other organizations like the Leo Club and Ebony Awareness have tried to hold mid-year dances other than Homecoming and Prom, but none have been successful.
Some pro-Winter Formal SGA members argue that the failure of previous dances can be attributed to being informal and poorly advertised.
Suggestions for hyping the Winter Formal include having a teacher-police officer basketball game, having another Spirit Week and even by spreading the excitement by word of mouth.
“If people know about it they’re going to tell their friends and the news is going to spread,” ensures Prater.
“In order to make this happen, we need to get students excited about it, just like they get excited about Homecoming ever year. Its all about school spirit,” Prater adds.
Many students chose not to go to Homecoming so they can afford to go to Prom, and vice versa.
Adding another dance to some students’ lists of expenses will be a deciding factor of whether or not they will go. For the average student, Homecoming can cost up to one hundred dollars and Prom can, and usually does, cost more than that. Few students are willing and able to pay twice that, even if the expense is accompanied by twice the fun.
The success of the dance depends totally on the effort of the SGA and their persuasion of the popular acceptance of having a Winter Formal.
SGA President Vladimir Rodriguez says, “It’s not only the dedication that SGA puts forth, but also other students that want this dance.”
In order to voice your opinion on this pending issue, attend SGA meetings in B2 every Tuesday during lunch.
