Horticulture science class and the junior class held a daffodil drive during the first three weeks of October as part of the beautification project started last year. Daffodil bulbs can be purchased from the junior class.

Sponsoring the daffodil drive was horticulture science teacher Lee Paul, who is also the co-teacher of Earth Space systems. "[The goal of] the daffodil drive is not to raise money, [it is] to plant flowers out in the courtyard so it will be prettier," said Paul. She added that any kind of donation is appreciated and needed for the continuation of the beautification project.

Along with the junior class, the horticulture science class is selling daffodil bulbs. The junior class made the decision to participate in the daffodil drive in order to raise money for the 2009 prom, which they will be coordinating this year.

According to Paul, planting the daffodils could potentially promote the appeal of the courtyard and benefit the general environment. "If you make a more park-like area that has flowers, people are more likely to be calmer," said Paul.

The daffodil drive can also improve the attitude of the school and help to boost CHS spirit. "The horticulture science class will be actively planting the daffodil bulbs and we are looking to get some volunteers," said Paul. Students who would like to plant the daffodil bulbs in the courtyard are encouraged to help. In this region, daffodils can only be planted through December. Student Service Learning hours will be available for anyone who wishes to volunteer.

Daffodil bulbs can also be purchased from Lowes, Home Depot or Southern States. A bag of daffodil bulbs costs only $8 at Southern States. The prices will decrease throughout the Fall, but waiting too long to buy a daffodil bulb will not help. Daffodil bulbs for the drive can be dropped off in the CHS main office in the box that is labeled "daffodil drive."

After the daffodil bulbs have been planted in the courtyard, "students will be able to help with the maintenance of the flowers," said Paul. "We’re going to start with just [the] one courtyard this year, we’re starting small." The beautification project was started by a student last year as a Capstone project, but has caught wind and expanded far beyond the one student.
