This year’s seminar has seen many changes including the addition of Seminar Exercise Time (SET) in place of bi-monthly seminar activities.

SET was added to encourage more students to get active. Students go to Ravenscroft Gym, Willis Gym or the weight room during seminar. Students can shoot hoops, lift weights, throw a football around or walk or jog around the gym.

“(SET) allows more opportunities for students to get active,” P.E. teacher Lisa Antonowich said.

To encourage more students to come in during SET, the Wellness Committee decided to use some money from a grant to buy iPods for students to use. School nurse Karen Lehman applied for the $1,000 grant from the Healthy Habit for Life grant program created by the BlueCross BlueShield of Kansas Foundation.

The iPods should be here sometime next semester. Four iPod nanos will be ordered, as well as an iTunes card that will be used to put music on the iPods for students to listen.

Antonowich is hoping that getting these iPods will encourage more girls to come in as well.

“Lots of guys come in (during SET), but more girls should consider coming in,” Antonowich said.

Having iPods provided by the school will also make students able to bring their own iPods in to use during SET. Antonowich and Lehman think the iPods were a good idea because it gives students an added incentive to get active, even if it just means walking around the gym a bit.

“It’s very important to find an exercise you like doing, and do it for life,” Lehman said.

Hopefully SET will help students find their own exercise and continue on with it far into the future.

“It’s easy to turn 20, 30 and 40 years old, and not want to exercise,” Lehman said.

SET time is a program the school created to help improve activeness throughout life, not just the teen years.
