Senior Emily Cook and junior Skye Cribelar have a lot on their plates. Not only are they two editors for The Red & Black, but they are also a part of HELM, Hillsborough’s literary magazine. The IB duo now has another activity to add to their college transcripts. Cook and Cribelar are in the process of arranging a Cultural Awareness Festival. But what exactly was their motivation for wanting to create this fest? Cribelar simply states that “this school has so much cultural diversity, it needs to be celebrated.” Cook continues, saying that “our friends have brought food to school and we’ve been able to experience different cultures. We wanted to share these experiences with the entire student body.” After months brainstorming, it’s finally going to happen. Ideas for the upcoming cultural day have been floating around for a while. The administration has approved their project and the proposed event will be sometime in February. There are merely two short months to complete planning. They intend to have everything covered for this event. The two are hoping to incorporate cultural clothing as well as food, music, and traditions relating to individual ethnicities. With so many different cultures at the school, this event is sure to bring together students that are willing to participate and share themselves with those who are interested in learning about it. With plans to get a committee together and teacher April Fiore on as a sponsor, the dynamic duo can make their dream a reality. After the first meeting, Cook and Cribelar will contact any students interested in participating in the celebration. Any students that are interested in learning more about the celebration can contact Fiore in Room 308.
