I went into the theatre expecting a decent film; you know, something better to do on a Thursday night that did not include staring at my room ceiling wondering what to do in my boring house. The movie commences, and I begin to realize, "Hey! This is pretty good!" That’s right folks, ‘Star Trek’ is amazingly watchable, even if you haven’t seen an episode.

Quite frankly, ‘Star Trek’ never appealed to me just the same way ‘Star Wars’ never did as well. This movie, however, is so completely unlike the series that it is bound to attract younger audiences for a couple reasons.

One, it’s a great action packed adventure; think ‘Transformers’ mixed with a little bit of ‘Halo’ mixed with just the right amount of wit and you get this.

Two, the people in this movie are hot! Seriously, Chris Pine (‘Princess Diaries 2’) as James Kirk, Zachary Quinto (‘Heroes’) as Spock and Zoe Saldana (‘Guess Who’) as Uhura for the gentlemen, there is no way you won’t find someone at least slightly attractive in the movie. Raging hormones aside, the movie is action-packed, hilarious, and completely just amazing.

For those Trekkies out there, let me shine a light on the timeline of this movie. Star Trek: The Movie takes places before the original Star Trek of the 1960’s where Captain Kirk is well…captain. In this movie, Kirk is a cadet in the academy just beginning his journey towards being captain of the Enterprise.

The film was directed by J.J. Abrams who is known for his work on ‘Lost,’ ‘Alias,’ the new hit ‘Fringe,’ and the not-so-good movie ‘Cloverfield’ which personally, I loved. Though old audiences might feel that this new film won’t do the original series that Gene Rodenberry created justice, new audiences will fall in love.

As far as the quality of the movie, well, I’m easily entertained but I loved this movie. My only problem is that Kirk is constantly being beat up throughout the movie and yet he gets up with a limp but no broken bones or ribs; nothing at all. That was slightly unlikely but everything else I found great.

The special effects were rocking. The Enterprise was revamped and more sleek and beautiful than ever. For old fans, there are inside jokes from past Star Trek series.

The main characters that are all equally charming in their own personas are Kirk, Spock, Uhura, Scotty the Irish techie guy, Bones the full of emotion intermediary between Kirk and Spock , Chekov the Russian with the thickest accent in the galaxy, and Sulu the Asian backdrop character who is mostly known as Harold from ‘Harold and Kumar.’

I easily give this movie at least four stars for "boldly going where no man has gone before." For those of you who don’t know, that is the equivalent to Star Wars "In a galaxy far, far away" bit.
