At-a-glance

I thought that I would use my first opportunity to write a ‘story of the day’ to reflect on some of the goals that I have for this group of students that form the newspaper staff of the student newspaper at Boone Grove.  After completing a month this endeavor, there are quite a few things that have shocked and surprised me at the helm of my own classroom.  What I want to focus on in this piece is the goals and aspirations I hold specifically for the online and print versions of The Howl, Boone Grove High School’s student newspaper.

First, as a way of introduction, I want to say that the first month has been a blur to say the least.  With the help of a young, eager staff, and a supervising teacher like Mr.Flesvig who eases me through the various catastrophes that I have encountered in this class and others, the first issue of the newspaper is being printed as we speak.  With any luck, it should be available for public consumption in the middle of next week.  The whirlwind process has quickly returned as plans and preparations are being made for the October issue by the staff that I have the opportunity to mentor and often times learn from.

This first edition of the newspaper will offer its readers a look into the issues and news that are shaping students lives at Boone Grove.  For a newspaper of our size (approximately 15 students) that meets and works together as infrequently as we get the chance to, the process of choosing stories and shaping students’ reporting and writing skills can be a challenge.  From the Chesterton tornadoes to the beginning of an era in Boone Grove High School football, the inaugural issue of The Howl presents an opportunity for the students to report the news that most deeply impacts them and produce a final product that they and the entire student body can be proud of.

Overthe next few months of the school year, this site will be a spot whereyou can check out not only what’s newsworthy here at Boone Grove buthow its students view and are affected by the news here in northwestIndiana and beyond.  My goal is to improve theefficiency and quality in every aspect from the early stages of writingstories to the production of the final copy.  Therest of the staff and I are always open to the thoughts of our readersso shoot us an e-mail at the link provided or contact me personally at adam.tein@valpo.edu.
