Be ready to get “oinked” up with Theater Pro’s fall production of Charlotte’s Web. This classic childhood story has touched many hearts and, for the first time, is taking the stage at Bandera High School on November 12, 14, 20, and 21, at 6:30pm in the auditorium. Ticket prices are $5 for adults and $3 for students.
Using the specially built rotating stage, this story “revolves” around Wilbur, a rambunctious, life-loving pig who befriends Charlotte (played by Kayla Rohrbach), This unselfish spider helps to keep Wilbur (played by Ttory Capes) from being butchered. Many others, such as Templeton the rat (played by Justin Chesnut), the Goose and Gander (played by Patricia Cornwell and Colby Huggins) and the Sheep and Baby Lamb (played by Katelyn Pyles and Hailey Clay) help Wilbur on his way to win a prize at the town fair.
Auditions for roles in the play took place last spring. Theatre teacher Mrs. Roslyn Houghton is said to have a “master plan” behind casting roles. Yet, when the young thespians received news of their parts, reactions ranged from surprise to joy. “It’s exciting when you get your part. It’s kind of like starting a new life within your normal life,” said sophomore Brynn Hicks, who plays Fern Arable.
But along with the joy also came the challenge of portraying farm animals instead of human beings. Actors and actresses have to keep track of their movements and sounds to make sure they resembles their animals. The biggest challenge, said leading actor Capes about his role as Wilbur, was learning how to squeal. “And every move I have to do is over exaggerated,” said Capes.
As for those Disney lovers out there who ask, ‘Why not choose another Disney play?’ Huggins said, “It was time for something different.”
Recollect E.B. White’s classic childhood story tale, while getting spun into the play of Charlotte’s Web! Senior Nick Lemus (who plays the Arable’s son, Avery) encourages all students to come out and see the play. “Don’t be a fool, talking animal’s rule!” Lemus said.
