Katie Summers, a three year veteran of Varsity Girls Water Polo, tells of the RHS team and their achievements in the water polo sections this season. This is the first time the team has made it this far and it is a big gain for the school's reputation.

Q: How do you feel about this being the farthest you've come as a team?
A: I think it's really exciting for our team. We've always lost the first section game so us coming this far and beating the other teams is pretty cool.

Q: What do you attribute the team's success to this year versus past years?
A: I think we've just bonded a lot more over the past few years, especially the six or seven seniors who have been on Varsity for three years together and have had all the same experiences together.

Q: What comes next?
A: We play Granite Bay in semi-finals for sections today, then if we beat them, we play Rio Americano.

Q: What are the team's chances against those two opponents?
A: We have a good chance at beating Granite Bay. Rio is a really good team so they might be harder to beat.

Q: How does the competition look from here out?
A: Well our rival used to be Del Oro but we beat them in both the games we played against them for league. One of our wins against them was on our senior night, so that made it even better.

Q: What does this mean for the school's record and reputation?
A: I think we've helped to make a better name for the polo team. We were okay before but we're more of a threat this year, which is really exciting for us as a team.

Q: What is it like having Lydia on the team with you? Is there any sibling rivalry at practices?
A: I loved having her on the team because we just always joked around. She gets along with everyone. She got moved up and she's learning defense in my position so that's really fun that we're kind of competing for the same spot.

Q: Did Lydia start playing because you've been playing for so long?
A: Yes and no. She's always been a really good swimmer, which obviously helps, and she's always been really competitive in her other sports like soccer. So it's kind of just natural for her to be in a competitive sport like polo.
