When it comes to student leaders at San Benito High School, Katie Thorpe has one of the most impressive track records. From her tremendous involvement in the student government, to her endeavors in community service, she has been and continues to be an inspiration to the school.
Thorpe says that her parents never “hovered”, and that her critical attitude toward herself and her endeavors probably came from her somewhat competitive relationship with her older brother, Matt.
“He was good at everything he did, “she said.
Thorpe is known best for her four years of involvement in ASB. As the president, she “dedicated most of [her] time to ASB” and trying to ensure that student’s voices always be heard. Her strong belief in equal treatment has also led her through four successful years as a member of the California Association of Student Councils, or the CASC program, this year as a counselor. The focus of this organization is to “develop skilled leaders…foster self esteem and build citizenship…[it] empowers youth to take action.”
Having always embodied a passion for school activities and leadership, Thorpe says that she is thrilled to be able to make a difference.
“I’m happy. Stressed at times, but happy,” she said. The SBHS Drama program has also played a significant role in Thorpe’s high school career.
“I love to dance,” she said. “That’s originally how I got involved.”
Her dedication to SBHS and its programs has never been put into question, and it adds to her equally impressive services to the community. Along with her participation in School Site Council, and her responsibility as the co-founder of The Baler Compass—a program that is designed to bring students, parents, and teacher together—she has also been involved in the Relay for Life for the past three years, and volunteers her time at the Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital organizing yearly events.
Thorpe’s recent activity in dealing with the school’s budget crisis and her unending devotion to the well-being of SBHS have started her on a path of leadership and success that will lead her through life accomplishing any task she sets her mind to.
