April 14, 2009 is a day that the people of Woodland and especially the students of Woodland High will never forget. One year ago Woodland lost two amazing teenagers, Katie Blacklaw and Eddie Denson, both freshman.
The following day the entire school came together to support each other. Students wrote in chalk on every available surface of the bell tower, put up posters around the school and held a candle light vigil in their memory.
Katie and Eddie touched many people in their lives. Their memorial was uplifting to see the entire gym filled with people whose lives had been impacted by them. At the end of the service, everyone walked outside and let go blue and green balloons, which were their favorite colors and said a prayer.
Even though this time was an extremely sad time for everyone, it’s good to take a minute and remember them for the astounding people they were and what good they did in their lives.
“Eddie was a guy with a big heart and had a smile that could undeniably light up any room. He was certainly the best friend I ever had,” said Savannah Chaffin former WHS student.
“What I loved about Katie was that she was a beautiful person, inside and out,” said Taylor McCullough.
They will never leave the hearts and minds of the people in Woodland. Instead of remembering them and being sad, remember them and smile. We love you Katie and Eddie. n
