Last year junior Katie B. won the Doc Sickles Science Scholarship which allowed her to attend, from June 13- June 18, University of Wisconsin Madison's Engineering Tomorrow's Careers camp. The camp promotes engineering studies for girls across the nation.
Katie B. recalls, "It was like being enrolled at Madison for a week, it was really neat". She attended labs, lectures and other adventures during the week. Their days were intense, sometimes having up to six hours of classes per day, but in the evening they found time to relax and enjoy different activities such as movies, shopping, volleyball, even the occasional comedy group.
Katie B. applied for the Doc Sickles Science Scholarship, recommended to her by Mr. Samuels, for her freshman year as well. Katie B. won the scholarship and made good use of it at a women's engineering camp at Michigan Tech last summer. The scholarship goes to a student planning to attend any science related camp, and Katie has received it the last two years in a row. Next summer, Katie hopes to participate in a six-week research program at MIT.
According to the Society of Women Engineers, women still only make up nine percent of the recipients of engineering-related bachelor's degrees. Katie is blazing new ground for other girls intrigued by engineering.
