"Seniors Ashley Cox, Ashely Atkins ,and Taylor Davis are serving hot meals for the homeless at a park in Los Angeles, California for their missions trip at the L.A Dream Center, on March 8, 2011." - Catherine De Leon
This year
for the senior missions trip, the Class of 2011 took a trip to Los Angeles,
CA. They did a variety of activities, like distributing food, talking with
the homeless, and going to Universal Studios.
“It was a
very eye opening experience,” said senior Bethany Baskin.
During some free time, some of the
seniors went to Venice Beach while other went down Hollywood Boulevard and Rodeo Drive.
“The beach
was warm with a nice breeze,” said senior Melvin Coumpy.
The trip to
Los Angeles wasn’t all fun and games; they also participated in helping with the Dream Center's ministry activities. One ministry was helping to distribute food for an outreach program which
feeds thousands of people a day.
“It felt
good abandoning yourself and giving back to your community by reaching people
that are overlooked on a daily basis,” Baskin said.
The flight
to Los Angeles is only a three hour flight, but it felt
like an eternity for some.
“I felt like
the flight was going to last forever. It was the scariest thing I’ve ever
experienced thus far, being so high up,” Coumpy said.
The seniors
also got to go to the historical Universal Studios, the place where stars are
often made. They got a chance to ride plenty of rides, including the Revenge of the Mummy
ride and a 4-D Simpson's Movie ride.
“The rides
there were ten times greater than the ones you would typically see at Six
Flags. I really enjoyed myself while I was there,” said senior Brent Isaac.
Some students also
got the opportunity to go to Beverly Hills and go shopping down Rodeo Drive,
which has some of the most popular but expensive stores like Gucci, Louis
Vuitton, Juicy Couture, and Dolce & Gabbana.
“Their
stores were way too pricey. They were nothing like the stores you would see at Uptown, or the Parks mall. As soon as I got back, I went straight to the mall to
buy everything. I’m never going to complain about how much something is down
here anymore,” Coumpy said.
The
seniors stayed busy while they were in Los Angeles, whether
they were shopping or helping the homeless or swimming at the beach. The seniors got to know how it feels to help somebody
that is less fortunate than them and maybe change the life of that person
forever, while also living a little bit of the high life.
“This was a
great experience for me. It really gave me a whole new perspective on life and I
will never take it for granted again after this trip,” Isaac said.
