Hanna Spears and Tanya Hennen show their support for the fight against breast cancer by wearing pink! - Melody Chen
Thursday, October 20, Bellbrook High School’s Key Club devoted a full day to educating students about breast cancer. Key Club encouraged students to support the cause and dress for success in, of course, pink. The mentor that wore the most pink will be awarded bagels. As a district, we raised almost $2,500 for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Team BHS raised $611.02 with freshmen raising $149.93, sophomores $113.77, juniors $44.69, seniors $4.43, staff $286.00, and other people donating $12.20. The only building in the district to raise more than BHS was the primary school, Stephen Bell Elementary.
Everywhere you turn, you turn can’t go a day without seeing a breast cancer awareness ribbon. Whether it is worn by a neighbor to honor a family member they have whose suffered, or in an advertisement in a magazine, breast cancer awareness is everywhere. With pink being flaunted all across the country, it offers a hopeful outlook for women as October represents the 25th annual breast cancer awareness month. It has created so much more than just a message; it has made pink no longer just a color, but a symbol: a symbol of strength and hope to all women.
Last winter, BHS supported the fight against breast cancer by sponsoring the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The JV and Varsity Girls’ basketball teams played at Bellbrook Middle School, allowing free entry for those wearing pink and also donating all funds made to the Cure. This year, BHS is not only supporting the fight against breast cancer using athletics but also through student body involvement.
