Several Latino students attended the Latin Youth Conference
on November 5 at Oklahoma City University where one lucky student won a
$25,000 scholarship.
Isaac McCaslin, senior and HCP student, was the recipient of the scholarship, which was announced at the end of the event. McCaslin was "schocked, surprised, and very happy."
The students were informed weeks before the event and were invited to write an essay for a scholarship to OCU. The topic of the essay was about the “Dream Act.”
During the event they heard several speakers and guests. Isaac McCaslin’s favorite person who spoke was the
host. She described her childhood and her feelings of not being able to do
anything “big” with her life because she was undocumented. Now she is going to
college and creating a future for herself.
“Her story was very
motivational,” McCaslin said.
Other events included
luncheon, workshops, and college speakers. McCaslin encourages others to
go next year and apply to the scholarship.
“[Everyone] should go
it makes you a better person—more specifically Hispanics,” McCaslin said.
