College is something everyone has on their minds all the way through high school. You can get away from your parents, not go to class when you don’t want to, and you can have a blast every night. But, how do you suppose you’re going to pay for this experience we call college? Easy, scholarships. Our guidance counselor has many scholarships. For grades 9-12. Yeah, grades 9-12. You might think it’s hard but talking with Ms. Zumbolo and Mrs. Essex about it can make you feel more comfortable about them.
According to College Board, in 2011-12, 44 percent of full-time undergraduate college students attend a four-year college that has charges of less than $9,000 per year for tuition and other charges. That’s a lot of money accumulated over the years. That’s $36,000 that you have to pay out of your pocket. If you have a scholarship you can get a “free ride.” Ms. Zumbolo says there are always chances for scholarships. All you need is decent grades, to be on track to graduate, and to apply to a four-year college. Some come in for different fields, such as sports, and they look for athletic achievements, and most importantly, grades!
Scholarships can apply to any college or they can be school-specific. Ms. Zumbolo said that there are COUTNLESS scholarships. Where can you find information? On the big bulletin board, in the hallway, by the main entrance. Also, there is a folder in the counseling office with specific websites and information. Also, the information is available online and is updated every week. There are both local and national scholarships. Ms. Zumbolo has told me that not many students are interested in this opportunity. So, if you’re interested, see Ms. Zumbolo right away.
