November brought a multitude of best-selling games including additions to the Call of Duty, Battlefield and the Legend of Zelda series. In weeks each of these games profited over $100 million. However, the game that has received more attention than any other is Skyrim, the latest addition to the role-playing Elder’s Scroll series.
Skyrim is a single-player, role-playing game in which players are able to customize a character and explore a massive open-world realm.
You are a dragonborn warrior whose mission is to defend the realm of Skyrim from mysterious dragon attacks. To do this you must explore the immense 3D world and complete quests varying from slaying an encampment of rebels to mundane chores for townspeople.
Bethseda, the company that created the Skyrim, claims that the game features an infinite number of quests, assuring that players always have a job at hand.
On too many occasions I’ve caught myself getting distracted while walking to a quest destination. I’ll take a detour on my way over a mountain in order to explore a nearby cave where I find even more quests to complete. This makes it difficult to keep up with quests as they continue to stack up.
The myriad quests offered in the game assures that every play through us a unique experience.
The graphics of other massive open-world games such as Saints Row 3 and Red Dead Redemption fail in comparison to Skyrim.
The creators paid impeccable attention to the artwork in this game to create an incredibly immersive experience.
The realistic graphics gives the illusion that you are truly entering another world when you play.
When senior Slavina Goleva attempted to play the game she said, "When I started playing the game I had like no idea what I was doing. I would just like look around at all the pretty trees and stuff and I was like, how is this not real? My favorite part was when I chased a bunny rabbit around for like an hour. He was so cute!"
Unfortunately, many Xbox 360 players are missing out on these graphics due to problems with the console. During installation the game downgrades its textures, and then returns them to normal settings after the installation is complete.
The problem that Xbox users are facing is that the console keeps the downgraded graphics even after installation.
Bethseda has assured its Xbox users that a patch will be released soon to fix this problem. PC gamers have also reported many problems with Skyrim.
Bethesda recently released a patch for PC gamers that has caused crashes for many players.
When asked about the problems Skyrim is facing, senior Alex Petros said, "All of the problems the game faces are minor but stack up on each other. The graphics on my Xbox are almost always blurry which is infuriating because it does not do justice to the beauty of Skyrim. I often have to deal with the frustration of the game freezing. I’ll be in the middle of mining for dwarvan ingots in the mines west of Riften when all of a sudden my game will freeze and I will lose all of my experience. Yesterday I mined for eight hours in one sitting just to have all of my progress erased by the games technical issues."
Even with these many problems Skyrim has been an instant success. The day that it was released was a "sick" day for many students at school who discussed the game incessantly in classes for weeks.
Skyrim is considered a likely candidate to win the prestigious "Game of the Year" award after it fixes the kinks it’s currently facing.
With its immersive graphics and dynamic quests, Skyrim is sure to be discussed by students for months to come.
