- Allie Carley
Most high school students dread the beginning of the school week, especially Mondays. For me, Monday is the most important day of the week for only one reason: Pretty Little Liars. I spend the day in a cloud of anticipation wondering what is going to happen in that week's episode. When it is eight o’clock, you can hear me screaming all the way in China when I hear the words, “Previously on Pretty Little Liars...”
The show follows the story of four best friends in Rosewood, Pennsylvania: Aria, Hanna, Emily, and Spencer. Their best friend, Alison DiLaurentis, went missing one night during a sleep over. A year later her body was found in a ditch behind her old home. At Ali’s funeral the group of girls get a threatening text message from an anonymous person who refers to them-self as “A.” These text messages, and trying to figure out what happened to Ali are two of the main story lines in the show. Another big plot in the story is how the four girls friendship strengthens even though the universe seems to be against them.
In 2010, when the commercials for the ABC Family’s hit show surfaced, I instantly wanted to watch the show. It looked like something I would like. When I learned a book series was involved, I knew I needed to get my hands on them. It was probably the most exhilarating series I’ve ever read. The book took so many turns, I was literally hanging onto the edge of my seat waiting for the next surprise.
When the show aired, I was glued to my seat to watch the pilot and when the opening theme music played, I knew this show would be as good as the books. The show and the books differ enough to leave fans hanging on, and for die hard book fans to still connect to the characters they already fell in love with.
When the story lines for each of the characters progressed, I realized that the books and the show are a lot more different than I expected. There are huge story lines that are a big deal in the books but are never mentioned in the show. I sometimes feel like even though they are missing things in the show, it has qualities that the books lacks. I don’t find myself comparing the show and the books because they are both equally amazing and each has something special that make it that way.
The end of the second season is coming and on March 19, we will all find out who the mysterious A is, according to show creator I. Marleen King. Even though A’s identity will be revealed, there’s still the searing mystery of what exactly happened to Alison. Just maybe, we will find out why Jenna is so creepy, and what’s going on with her and Garrett. You can catch all the drama Monday nights at 8:00 PM on ABC Family.
