50 years have gone by and where has this country gone? The movie The Help asks the viewer this very question. The movie is based in the 1960s in the state of Mississippi, around the time of Martin Luther King during the rise of the civil rights movement. It shows what it was like to be an African-American maid. Women in the 1960s were the queens of the home, even though they basically did nothing in the home. The maids cleaned, the maids cared for the children, and the maids always changed the babies’ diapers. The movie shows the pressure on women to just stay at home and hang out with friends.

In this small town one lady controlled it. Hilly Holbrook sent shudders down everyone’s spine when her name was said. She decided who to be friends with and who to deny as existing. She went so far to the point of sending her own mother to a nursing home for laughing at her. Every woman in the movie bowed at her feet because they did not want to be cast out from society.

This fact in the movie makes people think a little. Is this really different now?

If a viewer thinks a little bit they may discover that there is a Hilly Holbrook in every town or school. This person thinks he or she is above the rest and everyone treats her or him that way.Another thought that is put across is the thought of racism. Viewers dig deep into their minds and askif racism still exists in today’s world. Where have civil rights taken people? Has the human race really become more equal? Though The Help is long in length, it keeps people interested. However, it is not a movie parents should bring their young children to see. The movie has a fair amount of swearing in it. On a rating scale this movie receives a score of three out of five stars. The score would be perfect without all of the swearing. If someone is in the mood for a good movie they should take a trip to the neighborhood theater or redbox and see a great show!
