Blue Valentine
Michelle Williams (Cindy) and Ryan Gosling (Dean)

Reality always seems to hit like a punch in the face. Blue Valentine stars Ryan Gosling (Dean) and Michelle Williams (Cindy) playing a couple whose relationship is falling apart. This movie is so raw that it will rip at that part of you that wants all movies to be: “...and they lived happily ever after.”
This movie slides in and out of moments gracefully, letting you see the precious kindling of young love, and also the painful times where it breaks apart.
It will be like a reality check. It might be a blow in the face compared to all those classic, heartwarming films that tell you tales everlasting love. Well, not all love is everlasting. And it might not be fun to figure out, but it’s worth watching. This is a great movie for anyone who’s going to be single on Valentine’s Day. Don’t see this with a date!

What Dreams May Come
Robin Williams (Chris) and  Annabelle Sciorra (Annie)
For those of you, who don’t want a downer this Valentine’s Day, go with the vastly underrated What Dreams May Come.
It’s about a husband who goes to Heaven, leaving behind a wife who already lost her two kids four years earlier.
The visual effects (for all those beauty junkies) are stunning, showing the gorgeousness of Heaven, along with the desolate darkness of Hell.
The emotional honesty of the movie goes fluidly throughout this movie. Although I will admit, those of you who are cliché-a-phobic may want to avoid this movie. However, for those who just want to see a love story that transcends any universe, you’d love this film.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Kate Winslet (Clementine) and Jim Carrey (Joel)

Everyone has a few relationships they’d like to forget. But are any memories truly worth erasing? This couple finds the answer in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Their relationship is a little rocky, but you can see the love flowing in between them. Between moments of running in snow, to some cursing and screaming, they are truly a couple of people who just wanted to forget.
This art house film has wonderful direction and visuals. You can really see in Joel’s mind as he slowly starts to lose it.
This is a great date movie, and is even good for those singles who have a couple of horrible relationships left in the past. Forgetting may be blissful, but life’s nothing without some bad memories.

500 Days of  Summer
Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Tom) and Zooey Deschanel (Summer)

For anyone who just went through a break-up, or those who are even pining after that cutie who dumped you years ago,  500 Days of Summer is the movie for you. This movie is delightfully funny and sweet, but won’t make you want to stab anyone’s eyes out, I promise.
The protagonists, Tom and Summer are learning about love through each other during a summer of their lives. Summer doesn’t really believe in everlasting love, but Tom is a romantic at heart. Through all their adorable adventures, they learn that fate and destiny is real, it just doesn’t always come at ideal times.
