For about five years, the Buzzards Bay Theater has sat idle, with no one knowing what happened. That was until Wareham resident Jeff Avery came along.
Avery planned to open the theater for the Scallop Festival, on September 22, but he’s had some minor set backs. The heating wasn’t working. The landlord and Avery have been working on a new system, pushing the opening 4 - 6 months back. If all goes well, he hopes to open in March.
Just about everything in the building has changed. Four new screens instead of white walls and white paneling behind the concession stand have been added. The plumbing and wiring is all set.
Even the prices have changed. The cost of a movie at Heritage Theaters in Sandwich would cost you $14.18, for a movie, small popcorn and a drink. At Regal Cinemas in the Cape Cod mall, it would cost you $19. At Buzzards Bay, it will only cost you $7.50 for admission, small popcorn and a drink. Compared to Flagship Cinemas in Wareham, which will cost you $8.50 for just admission to and evening movie, it sounds like a great deal.
Jeff also recently tested a system to play video games on the big screens. “How cool would that be to play your favorite X-Box or Playstation game on a huge screen?” He also recommends coming in and booking a birthday party.
“I’m so excited for the theater, Flagship is way too expensive,” said junior Faith McCarthy.
Renovating a theater costs money, so to help pay for everything, Avery is selling seats. Its $25 per seat and with a purchase you get your name on a mural as a supporter, 3 $7.50 gift certificates, and entry into 3 drawings. The drawings are 1 BMW Bicycle, $500 cash, 100 additional gift certificates. He has sold 50 seats, and still needs to sell 550 more.
The theater is going to play cult classics, and second-run films. “I can’t wait. It’s going to be cool to see old movies, and not have to rent them and buy them if you are only going to watch them once,” says frequent movie goer Chris Price.
