Undefeated — a word that conjures up a mix of emotions that can best be explained by an athlete.

And it’s a feeling the volleyball team has come to know quite well. At 16-0 the team has gone without a loss during the regular season, and was recently seeded first in its conference.

“We deserved it, we worked hard all year and it’s finally paid off,” said senior mid-hitter Elsey Hopkins.

Playing through all the hype that has built since the season’s start has made the team more confident and focused, senior Mallory O’Connell, setter, said.

Junior Kaley Lyons, mid hitter, agreed.

“We go in with confidence, but try not to overlook anyone,” she said.

So far, challenges have come in unexpected places.

“When we play the not so good teams, it’s hard to focus,” O’Connell said.

The girls knew they were a target for the competition. Especially when they hit districts this week.

“Every team wants to beat you, and every game is a potential upset,” senior Lorin Opfer said. “From now on, our first loss will be our last.”
