In the past week, many BISD students, teachers, and organizations have joined together to contribute over $4000 to the Bastrop Employment Relief Fund for fire relief in the Bastrop community.
“The people of Bastrop are in need of help, and I am glad to see our students pour their hearts out for such a great cause,” BHS Principal Gary Bitzkie said.
According to The San Antonio Express News’ online website mysa.com, Bastrop has been fighting fires since September 4th. The fires have burned over 34,000 acres, and have destroyed over 1500 homes. So far, there have been two reported deaths, and 22 people are reported to be missing.
Last week, the Student Council sold tickets for $2 each to wear hats in the building as a fundraiser for this cause.
“ I think this is a very good thing we’re doing- it’s amazing that we’re able to help Bastrop in their time of need,” said Keely Naico, BHS Student Council President
The BHS cheerleaders also contributed to this fundraising effort by collecting donations at pick up/drop off lane in front of the school.
“I am glad that BHS is doing this,” senior cheerleader Kilee Morris said.
In addition to the efforts of the cheerleaders and Student Council, Business Professionals of America (BPA) donated $100.
“I believe that this is an awesome cause,” BPA sponsor Colleen Lewis said. “I would hope that if Bandera were in the same situation, that surrounding communities would help us as they have helped Bastrop.”
Other donations included $150 donated by the Key Club, $205 donated by the BHS coaching staff, and $200 donated by the Senior Class.
The amount raised by the Student Council at each BISD school are as follows:
Hill Country Elementary - $1000+
Alkek Elementary - $1155.51
Bandera Middle School – $562.10
Bandera High School - $1021.61
According to Mr. Bitzkie, the Student Council voted to allot the BHS monies to Bastrop’s teachers and students equally. A check will be delivered next week.
