(Dec. 20, 2011) -- On Dec. 15, sophomore Arsen Kaakijian couldn’t wait to wake up. It was the big day. It was the day his 14 fellow Music Club members and he had been preparing for for weeks. That day, the Clark staff gathered at the cybrary during snack for a special Christmas event. The tables were painted with red and green tablecloths. A spread of pastries and fruits was laid out on the tables for the guests to enjoy. On the other end of the cybrary, Kaakijian and his friends stood by the Apple computers, ready to perform Christmas songs for the district’s board members and Clark’s administration and staff.

“The reason why I [performed] is because I want to get into the Christmas spirit,” said Kaakijian. “It’s also fun and festive.”

Some students played the violin, some played guitar and one student played the keyboard. The rest, including Kaakijian, just sang. While the staff placed their favorite foods on their plates and engaged in conversations with each other, Music Club members sang Christmas-themed songs like “Feliz Navidad” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.”

For history teacher Nicholas Doom, the Christmas event ignited an abrupt yet significant change in his daily snack schedule. “I spend most of my snacks with students. [The students] spend their spare time to waste my spare time,” joked Doom. Spanish teacher Danilo Palacios and mathematics teacher Fred Blattner played the guitars and performed with the club. Both teachers practiced multiple times with the club members during enrichment prior to their performance. “Even though we were short on time and had a few songs, we did a good job,” said Palacios. “I want to thank Mr. Blattner for helping us out and providing us with his talent.”

As the event neared its end, assistant principal Lena Kortoshian thanked the event participants for “being a great staff and family,” and Music Club members performed the song “Feliz Navidad” once more. Unfortunately, the time came for everyone to clean up and return to their classes.

“It was memorable and enjoyable singing to the staff,” said Kaakijian. “I’m so excited that it’s Christmas already.”
