The room is large and full of an empty-feeling. Decoration here is nominal, sacrificed in favor of the least amount of distraction. Papers are organized and the few knick-knacks that catch the eye are dust-free and arranged just so. This is clearly the working space of someone serious about his career, from the weightiest of decisions to the micromanaging of everyday affairs.
Mr. Brian Dishman is, as anyone holding the Talon could hopefully piece together, the latest to take up the position of principal at Wayne County High School, doing so after a career as an educator that includes teaching science here at WCHS for several years.
Dishman observes that sometimes he does miss being in the classroom and working directly with students. He also admits the job can be somewhat stressful and at times even a bit overwhelming.
However, when things get stressful, Dishman says he takes a walk through the building and observes how students are growing both academically and socially, and that knowing he’s a part of that helps him to put things in perspective.
Dishman characterizes his first year as both difficult and exciting.
“It’s definitely a challenge, he remarked, “but also an adrenaline rush that always leaves you looking forward to each new day.”
At the time of this interview, the third nine weeks was coming to a close. With the end of that critical first year in sight, Dishman says he’s eager about the future.
“I’m very excited for this first year to be done. We’ve done good things. There’s a new course we’ve set with content structures, and I’m very excited to see where we’re going academically.”
