Students in Ms. Sloan's English III class still working on an assignment at 3:20 p.m. -
Spring is upon us and the days seem longer than the cold, unforgiving winter. In the case of school days at Wayne County High School, what seems to be true actually is. The official start and end points of a day’s learning have been extended by ten minutes each. Classes now begin at 8:05 a.m. as opposed to 8:15 a.m., and are dismissed at 3:25 p.m. rather than 3:15 p.m.
As with any decision, the students and faculty seem divided. There are those that despise being on campus for a minute longer, let alone twenty, while others absolutely adore losing the extra make-up days that this time affords us. Days that were previously part of summer vacation and were lost due to the number of snow days earlier in the year.
Kasey Malone, a WCHS student says, “As a senior, I see the extended schedule as a perfect idea. I personally would have added more time in the morning, though.”
The flip side of that argument has its place in the halls too. Freshman Kenzie Weston adds, “I honestly don’t think it’s worth the four days it makes up.”
No matter your opinion on the longer day, the school board is obviously behind it. The extra time in a school day will last until the end of the current school year. Next semester, the schedule will return to normal.
