Get ready for chilly weather! - Brooke Wilson

Considering the unusual weather we have had so far this winter, it is hard to predict what the later winter will bring. This season has hardly showed its wrath of stiffening, bitter cold weather, however, it is becoming time to prepare for what possible conditions lay ahead.

“With the right preparation, winter need not wreak too much havoc. It’s all about just being ready,” article writer Liz Lent states.

Preparations for cold weather conditions mainly include insulating and sealing your house. Insulation is one way to preserve energy and heat, as well as keep your heating costs down!

“Upgrading your home’s Energy Efficiency with insulation . . . dramatically reduces energy bills, improves comfort, and increases value,” comments Mills Efficient Home Services.

Another problem that comes with wintry conditions is ice damming, which is a build-up of ice over an unheated portion of roof or gutter. This serious issue can lead to roof damage and leaking. Insulation thwarts ice damming in its tracks!

Lowe’s Manager, Sam Weissel commends this preparation saying, “[T]he hot air wants to get out to the cold.  It works in conjunction with the regular insulation, fiberglass insulation that's in the house already."

Another convenient preparation is pipe sleeves. Pipe sleeves prevent pipes from freezing and breaking, as well as preventing you from paying for the entire repair, come Spring season.

“Besides insulating pipes in cold climate areas to protect them against freezing, wrapping exposed cold water lines prevents them from sweating and collecting moisture in warmer climates and months. This . . . will prevent drippings and condensation that can cause spots or water damage,” HandyAmerican Services report.

The key to successful preparation is timeliness. Those serious about accident prevention as well as cost saving should consider taking this task up early.

"[F]rom the beginning of September to first freeze is the time to do it. It's well worth going ahead and completing; having it done so you don't have to worry about it all winter.  Most of this, once it's done, it's done.  You don't have to do it year after year," says Weissel.

For those who aren’t as proactive, there’s still time to take action! Any time to prepare for cold weather is better than no time! It is a small effort that will completely repay itself in the long run.
