A man dress in a Frosty the Snowman costume was arrested for assault at a Chestertown Christmas Parade on November 26.
Fifty-two year old Kevin Walsh was playing the part of the holiday character at the annual parade down High St. in Chestertown, MD when he was asked by police to leave the parade for belligerent behavior. According to police, Walsh became agitated and kicked a nearby police dog. The surrounding officers tried to calm him down, but they say Walsh began to curse, removed the foam Frosty head from his shoulders, and struck one of the officers in the face with it before being promptly wrestled to the ground handcuffed.
“They kept me in the police car for 10 minutes while the parade was marching by and everyone was looking at me,” said Walsh, who still claims innocence despite being convicted of assault for the incident.
Walsh proceeded to resist arrest until he was finally detained and booked by the officers for second degree assault and resisting arrest. He was kept in jail overnight, still wearing his Frosty suit, until his hearing the next morning, where he was released on bail. Welsh is a locally well-known prior offender, and at the time of his arrest, he was still on probation for disorderly conduct and for calling 911 purely to arrange for an interview with CNN.
“He likes to agitate the police,” said Deputy Police Chief William H. Dwyer, who oversaw Walsh’s case. “He’s just a town nuisance.”
This most recent violation could cost Walsh significant jail time due to his violation of his probation and continued offenses. Some of his neighbors have attributed his behavior to a stroke suffered several years ago, but Walsh claims he is not crazy, just a political activist exercising his right to free speech.
Whatever the cause of his actions, police are hopeful that this most recent detainment will help Walsh reform his ways.
