Stay healthy during the holidays! - Molly Kelly

Does the tomato sauce on pizza automatically make pizza a vegetable? Are gummy bears a fruit just because they have a fruity flavor? No.

“Batter-coated French fries are a fresh vegetable, according to the Agriculture Department, which has a federal judge's ruling to back it up. But the department said Tuesday that the classification applies only to rules of commerce, not nutrition, and it doesn't consider an order of fries the same as an apple in school lunches,” stated Everything-science.com.

We generally think of a vegetable as healthy, but considering French fries as a vegetable is nearly impossible. They’re greasy and salty, so how can it really be considered a vegetable?

“The newest version of a proposed Congressional spending bill will classify pizza and French fries served as part of school lunches as vegetables,” reports the Associated Press.

Looking at the long term problems putting pizza and French fries on the school lunch menu would mean one out of two people will be obese by the time of 2030. Clearly French fries are not a vegetable Jimson Lee knows at least three reasons why a French fry is not a vegetable.

“1) French Fries are Made of Bad Carbohydrates, 2) French Fries may be Deep Fried in Trans Fats: If you haven’t heard that Trans Fats can cause heart disease, then you’ve been living under a rock, and 3) French fries have high levels of Acrylamide, reported to be a possible cancer-causing substance.”

With these three logical and irrefutable reasons how can people and administrations still continue to call French fries a vegetable? By calling a French fry a vegetable one is endangering friends, family, and most importantly the children’s health in America.
