With the school year coming to a close, it’s tournament time for our spring sports. Tennis, Lacrosse, and Track and Field are finishing up their season-ending tournaments while Baseball and Softball are about to start theirs. This is crunch time, and these teams want to do their best to end the season on the right note.
The guys and girls tennis teams competed in the Region 4 tournament at Bowling Green High School (BGHS) and Keriakes Park. Christian Barrett, a junior, got the 8 seed for girls’ singles and Kenny Wilson, a sophomore, got the 5 seed for boys’ singles; they are the first Spartans to get seeded in the tournament. “We practiced really hard and put all our time and effort into preparing for the tournament. We did our best, and we can only improve our results next year,” said Barrett. Wilson advanced farthest, reaching the quarterfinals before losing to the 2 seed.
The Lacrosse team won the state championship, defeating Oldham County by a score of 9-6. “After our senior night, we felt we should get this championship for our seniors,” said Nick Simons, a sophomore. “Because we got eliminated in the first round last year, we wanted to go all the way this year.”
Track and Field had their regionals this past week. They came in third overall. Senior Jared Skrabacz and the 4X800 relay team advanced to the state meet. “Most people learned the importance of conditioning, decreasing your time, and different techniques. It was a fun time; we did pretty well, and hopefully next year we’ll do even better,” said sophomore Trey Broaddus.
The baseball and softball teams have districts this week. Baseball plays Greenwood and softball plays Warren Central. If they win, baseball would play Warren East and softball would play Greenwood.
Along with many other things, our spring sports have been very successful, especially since it’s been their first year. Hopefully our teams will see even more success in the coming years.
