Pain. Fear. Death. Friends Lost. Loved ones fighting. Sacrifices. Bravery. The Games. These are what the citizens of The Districts feel everyday. The Hunger Games is a futuristic version of the gladiator fights. Twelve districts surround The City, a place where “shortage” is an unknown word, and there is an abundance of everything from food to the amount of make-up and wigs that crowds the streets. To keep the Districts from rebelling, the city forces each one to send one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 to participate in The Hunger Games, a fight to the bloody and brutal death.
When Katniss Everdeen’s 12 year old sister, Prim, is old enough to be put in the drawing for the games, Katniss is positive that her sister will be safe, considering Katniss has many more names in the bowl then her little sister. But when her fears become reality, Katniss must make a choice: will she allow her little sister to be carted off to what will be her certain death or take her place? Though to Katniss, that choice is simple. But when she and the other competitor: Peeta Mellark, the baker’s son, are dragged off to the city to get ready to fight, she realizes she has to make it back to her sister and mother, for she is all they have left.
But Peeta and the last victor from District 12: Haymitch have other plans for Katniss. Unwillingly, Katniss has been thrown into a web of lies; but not all is as it seems. Will Katniss be able to save herself, and in turn her family? Will she be able to defeat the Hunger Games and show the City that she is not merely one of their pawns? Or will The Games consume her, taking everything she knows and loves?
Katniss’ adventures are spread through three books that will delight and entertain a reader of any age and of any gender with their numerous twists, turns, and surprises. The Hunger Games is the first of the trilogy, and following after that is Catching Fire, and Mockingjay. This trilogy will have readers on the edge of their seats, alongside Peeta and Katniss on a journey that will leave readers wanting more of The Games.
